Local Events / News

Join us for the Hog County Amateur Radio Association’s monthly breakfast.  The first Saturday of each month usually, we meet at 8:30 AM at Howie’s Family Restaurant in Bushnell, Florida.  If you do want to attend please let us know as we need a head-count in order to reserve the right number of tables.  So shoot us an email to K4HOGFL@gmail.com and RSVP your breakfast spot.

During the winter season while we have our seasonal operators down (Red Oaks Group) we also have a luncheon on the third Saturday of the month. The location for this one changes around from Coyote Rojo Mexican, to Beef O’ Brady’s and could goes elsewhere so please send an email to K4HOGFL@gmail.com for the latest information or to be placed on the email / mailing list.

Repeater Access

Thanks to Bobby-KX4RS who already provides an EchoLink connection to the 145.490 repeater in Bushnell, FL; we now have an AllStar Network access as well.  So if you do AllStar you can access us via Node Number 46094#.  If you have no idea what we are talking about you may want to make your way over to  https://allstarlink.org and take a look or register.

Friday Free for All Net – a multi purpose net

We kicked of a new Radio Net on Friday, August 4, 2017 at 8:30 PM and we call it the Friday Free for All Net.  This is a multi purpose net to include a Traders Net, Technical Net, Informational Net and wrapping up with a Rag Chew Net.  We believe our first net was pretty good, we had a total of fourteen (14) on the net and we covered the whole range with the net lasting one hour.  We had operators checking in from Winter Garden, Astor, Dunnellon, Sumter County and a few via EchoLink as well.  So if you are looking for something to do on Friday evenings come on over to the 146.925 / W4OE Repeater in Sumterville, Florida and jump on in for something a bit different.

Well, the winter season is all but over – we say bye for now to our winter Red Oaks Group

Wow, where did this winter season go, seems like just last week the Red Oaks Group got here and now they are leaving us. We didn’t really get involved in too much this time around yet we were all very busy.  Oh well, we locals hope that you Red Oaks Folks have a wonderful summer back in your respective home towns and enjoy the hobby accordingly.  Us locals and the few of the seasonals that failed to go home this time will keep on keeping on and hold the fort down until y’all come back.  Maybe next year we can get a few more folks involved in the local things going on; especially the Fair, if we do that again, that was a lot of work. Anyways, hope you all the best.

 Sumter County Fair – Friday, March 3rd – Saturday, March 11, 2017

Well it is here, the Sumter County Fair staring today, Friday, March 3, 2017.  Our Hog County Amateur Radio Association booth / table is set up in the first building as you enter the Fair from the main entrance. We are by the back doorway leading out into the second building on your way out to the Midway.  So if you come to the Fair, please stop by and see us, learn a little about amateur radio and the Hobby thereof.

Weather Ready Nation

Hog County Amateur Radio Association is proud to be a partner with the National Weather Service by participation in their Weather Ready Nation as an Ambassador here in Sumter County, Florida.  We hope to be able to incorporate weather related information in our events, nets and other areas to the public of Sumter County.  One drawback to being an Ambassador for them is while they have some brochures and flyers we can use, they do not have the budget to provide them for us; we can print off all we want however, that also becomes a cost for us to cover. So we will have to find some funding resources for this.

 Sumter County FAIR – March 3 – 11, 2017

The Hog County Amateur Radio Association has the opportunity to participate in this year’s Sumter County FAIR. We have been given the opportunity to set up a table / booth in the 4-H building where the arts and crafts are usually displayed and we will have the area right next to the doorway leading out toward another building and the Midway.

We are looking forward to this opportunity to host a public display of amateur radio as the hobby as well as the service side of amateur radio. If all goes well we will have a radio Go-Kit set up and antennas run outside the building with hopes of being able to actually make some radio contacts and to show people what we do, especially any kids who may be interested.

We of course will be looking to our associates to provide coverage at our table / booth for a few hours at a time and to answer any questions that visitors may have. So stay tuned for additional information as we move along here in February.

Welcome to 2017 – we hope that the New Year will be a grate year for you.

Winter Field Day – Saturday, January 28 – 29, 2017

Update: 2-2-2017

Well we made it through our first WFD event, for Florida we were cold and wet as it rained most of the Saturday night. We had four stations set up so to speak and collectively there were 170 contacts made, a lot of CW contacts and then phone / voice contacts. Throughout the eastern side of the U.S. into Canada and a few DX stations as well. Overall we feel the event was a success, not without some equipment and operational issues however we considered them training opportunities and found solutions to our problems and contiued to work on.

We are gearing up for this year’s Winter Field Day which will be held the last weekend on January 2017. This will be the first year we have joined in on this Nation-Wide event and we are looking forward to it. We will be setting up several stations to include a mobile trailer (Go-Box) and a tent for the other team.

Our location for this event will be the Kenny Dixon Sports Complex – 824 West Noble Avenue, Bushnell, Florida 33513.  If you are an Amateur Operator come on out and say hi, heck we might even let you on the air.  If you are even remotely curious or interested in finding out more about Amateur Radio then please come on out as well.  We would love to explain the Hobby and the Service of Amateur Radio and show you some of the things we do with radio.

Lake Panasoffkee, Florida – Christmas Parade – 2016

The Hog County Amateur Radio Association has been in contact with the Parade Officials for the Lake Panasoffkee Christmas Parade and they would like for our association to provide radio communications coverage for the parade this year. The parade will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2016.

So if we can muster enough volunteer radio operators to do this we will help them out this year and see how it goes. We feel that we need at least eight (8) volunteers.

This is an opportunity for us as a group here in Sumter County, Florida to give back to a Community within our County. And what better way than a Christmas Parade with kids and kids at heart.

So stay tuned as we move forward with the planning and implementation for this event.

Labor Day – summer is about over, September 5, 2016.

Well, at least that is what some of us are hoping for as we really do want some cooler weather. Not to mention that we are just a few months away from our Seasonal Associates being back.

The summer months were very slow, the locals took the summer off from our breakfast and lunch meetings. It has been a long and hot summer not unlike where some of our Seasonal Associates are from though.

As we move closer to the Season we hope to start our breakfast and lunch meetings back up in October, 2016 so that us locals can start planning out the winter season.

That being said we are looking into the idea of participating in what is known as “Winter Field Day” which is not associated with the ARRL Field Day. Winter Field Day will be held the last weekend of January, 2017 and while it is a contest of sorts, it is not as stringent as the ARRL Field Day Event. Of course the one plus is it should be cooler and secondly our Seasonal Associates will be able to participate with us.

We are also looking into the possibility of doing a display with live radio (we hope) for the 2017 Sumter County Fair. We hope to have a display in the area where most of the schools displays are and if all goes well we can have a radio set up and allow people to check out Amateur Radio.

Not to mention we want to throw a couple “Fox Hunts” in this time around as well. We just didn’t get that off the ground last time around.

Okay, looking forward to the next few months and then December when most of the Seasonal Associates will be returning. Until then, take care, be safe and see you soon.

News Letter – July 18, 2016

Hog County Amateur Radio Association, Inc. is about to turn one year old. That’s right 1 – year old; Hog County Amateur Radio Association, Inc. was birthed on Monday, July 27, 2015. So can we all say Happy Birthday!!!!!!

Our first year has been relatively a good one, especially when our seasonal residents are here at the Red Oaks RV Park and they participate more in regular events; i.e.: breakfast / lunch meetings and are more inclined to try things.

We are hoping the second year will bring some additional, positive change as well. We are hoping to get into the school system and hopefully set up an affiliate of our association at one of the schools. We hope to work with the kids and the next generation of amature radio operators.

We hope to have a few other events during the winter months and while our seasonal associates are here. Like a Fox Hunt / picnic one day at a local park. Maybe participate in Winter Field Day and invite some local kids to come and check out what we can do. And other events that we may agree upon to participate in.

So thank you to all who have made our first year good and to all who will continue to help us become a good Amateur Radio Association.

News Letter for May 1, – May 7, 2016

Hey,

Well here we are, May 1, 2016, already upon us, wow. And I have to say it is already too hot for me, the temp at our Hog County Weather Station is 95° so I am wondering if that means we are going to have another hot summer. Oh well, some like it hot, some not so much but that is the thing, we get what we get with the weather and there is nothing we can do about it.

Please remember as we do move into our hotter weather to take your precautions; keep hydrated for one but remember, drinking only water can cause you have “Water Toxicity” known as Water Intoxication or Water Poisoning, which is potentially fatal. Too much water causes an in-balance in our electrolytes.

Facebook, for those of you who do Facebook, look for the Hog County Amateur Radio Association and send a friend request so I can add you to the FB Page. This is a closed / private page so you have to be approved. We may open it up to a public page at some point but for now it is just for HCARA associates.
